IH Exposure Evaluations Noise
The OSHA noise standard (1910.95) is actually two different standards using different measurement criteria. The requirement for hearing protection is triggered by an 8-hour exposure at 90 dBA (decibels, A-weighted), with an instrument recording only sounds at 90 dBA or over. The second standard, that for mandatory hearing tests and other administrative exposure controls, is triggered by an 8-hour average exposure of 85 dBA measured with an instrument set to record all sounds 80 dBA and above. Adding to this mix decibel addition, the other exposure standards from the DOD and the ACGIH and adjustments for extended work shifts, it becomes important to know the topic thoroughly to make the proper compliance assessment. Our experience of the formulation and evaluation of other company specific noise exposure criteria as well.
Our typical services include a combination of general area noise level measurements and personal dosimeter results to document employee exposures, identification of the major contributing noise sources in the study area, recommendations for reducing noise at its source and evaluation of the adequacy of the hearing protection devices.
