IH Exposure Evaluations – Chemical

Some air contaminants are visible and some have odors but our senses are not always keen enough to know a healthy from and unhealthy exposure. OSHA has tried for a long time to formulate a general standard that would require the measurement and documentation of employee exposure to all listed airborne contaminants. Being opposed by both management and labor with this direct approach they have resorted to invoking the “general duty clause” to cover many of these cases. All of the individual chemical standards that have been established by OSHA contain an employee exposure monitoring scheme, but for the others employers have a “general duty” to perform the same kind of exposure evaluations. Beyond this, Worker’s Compensation and the threat of third party liability can take control to push for chemical exposure evaluations.

There is an OSHA or NIOSH approved method for sampling anything and everything in 1910.1000 Tables Z-1, Z-2 and Z-3. The trick to getting a representative measurement is knowing what to look for and at what concentration. Then the samples should be analyzed under the strict quality control required of laboratories with AIHA accreditation. In our thirty years of experience we have successfully sampled for just about everything on the list, and a few contaminants not on the list.
