Community Noise Assessment

Environmental noise regulations take one of two basic forms. They use either a single number, broad band, weighted criteria like “A”-weighting or equivalent noise level (Leq), or the octave band criteria using discrete frequency bands. The most widely applied environmental noise criterion is that established by the EPA with regard to airport and highway noise. The EPA guidelines use the Leq criterion. Local community noise ordinances can contain both the broad band “A”-weighting criterion and octave band spectra. HUD uses the day-night average (LDN) criterion based on this same Leq. The importance of the frequency analysis is that it provides information about how the noise in question can be distinguished from other background noise and takes into account the varying attenuation of the different frequencies with distance. The “A”-weighted criterion, on the other hand, provides an easily measured index, which is useful.

We have researched the various criteria and ordinances affecting community noise in the area. We can collect the data necessary to advise clients as to the impact of their operations on surrounding properties, their compliance with the governing ordinances and methods of reducing their noise related impact, if needed.
